Origin

Strawberry 1.0 Was the first digital painting in the “Gratitude” Series. The painting was started in 2015 and finished in 2017. Created in Procreate for iPad and ApplePencil and hundreds of hours of work. Inspiration was drawn from Across the Universe and The Beatles, the music that accompanied the origin of my creative endeavors.

Influences

The Beatles’ - Apple Records was spun off in 2007 as “Strawberry Records”. An expressive painting of a Strawberry was used as a symbol, and has since resonated with my own creativity and voice. In addition to musical influences, Caravaggio was another main source of inspiration for this piece.

Color and Composition

The redness of the Strawberry dominates this piece. Juxtaposed and layered with its complimentary color, Green - The stem and leaves branch out from the perfectly ripened fruit, standing tall but curled in infancy. Each individual seed creates its own unique colorful pattern, breathing air and life into the deep redness. The dark and almost black background, romanticizes the fruit and transforms it into an organic, edible gemstone. As if it were emerging from the darkness, and born out of pure emotion, isolated from the world… “A ruby in the rough.” It is no coincidence that the first piece in the series features “Red” - The color that begins our verbal recognition of the color spectrum, “ROY-G-BIV”.

Additional Information

You can feel the texture of the Strawberry in your imagination and with your finger. The texture of the paper used for the 1.1 Watercolor Edition bolsters the depth of every seed, nook and cranny… especially the crannies.
